The rally is now called the "Sturgis Motorcycle Rally". From 1992 to 1999 it was the "Sturgis Motorcycle Rally & Races". The last Black Hills Motorcycle Classic was held in 1991, the last year the founders of the rally, the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club, were involved with the rally itself. The club still holds the races during the rally but have nothing to do with the rally itself.
Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Inc. is a commercial venture that now "owns" the rally in partnership with the city of Sturgis. They are also at present the defendents in a lawsuit filed by the city of Sturgis over the use of the name "Sturgis".
If you attended and enjoyed the rally before 1990, be prepared for a big change. While you can still have lots of fun, the "flavor" of the rally is completely different.
If you come to the rally, I advise you to bring your camera, your patience (you wait in line for EVERYTHING), your sense of humor, and a BIG pile of money. Your helmet you can leave at the border if you want, not required for adults in SD.
